  • Berge and team awarded third NIH R01

    Jerica Berge (Medical School), along with an interdisciplinary team of co-investigators including Alicia Kunin-Batson (Department of Pediatrics), Rachel Hardeman (School of Public Health), Angie Fertig (Humphrey School of Public Affairs), David Van Riper (Minnesota Population Center), and Allan Tate and Grace Bagwell Adams (University of Georgia), were awarded $3,249,455 under the R01 mechanism on behalf of the National Center for Complementary & Integrative Health for their grant entitled "Multi-level predictors of structural racism and discrimination and associations with health and well-being across the life course in diverse families."

    The study will be one of the first to prospectively measure multiple levels of structural racism and discrimination using mixed-methods across two sites and associations with whole-person health across the life course in diverse families. Results of the study will inform the development of an intervention targeting multi-level structural racism and discrimination factors to promote health equity.

  • CIDRAP awarded $1 million in grants to create a Coronavirus Vaccines R&D Roadmap

    The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) at the University of Minnesota has received grants from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to create a Coronavirus Vaccines Research and Development (R&D) Roadmap aimed at developing broadly protective vaccines against betacoronaviruses, which predominantly circulate in bats and rodents and can “spill over” to human populations.

  • Brenda Child awarded 2022 Guggenheim Fellowship

    Brenda Child, Northrop Professor of American Studies in the College of Liberal Arts on the University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities campus, has been awarded a 2022 Guggenheim Fellowship by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Child’s selection comes after a rigorous application process, one in which just 180 individuals were selected from almost 2,500 applicants on the basis of outstanding achievement and exceptional promise. Child is a member of the Red Lake Band of Chippewa in northern Minnesota where she served as a member of a committee writing a new constitution for the 15,000-member nation. She also previously served as a member of the board of trustees of the National Museum of the American Indian-Smithsonian and was president of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association.

  • OVPR announces recipients of the Innovation Impact Case Award

    The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) has announced the recipients of its inaugural Innovation Impact Case Award, which recognizes University of Minnesota research that has led to significant impact outside of academia. The top prize of $10,000 went to two researchers/teams: Swati S. More and Robert Vince, Center for Drug Design, for a noninvasive, cost-effective eye imaging camera that can detect Alzheimer’s disease before symptoms are evident; and to Sayan Biswas, Department of Mechanical Engineering, for an inexpensive, plasma-based spark plug alternative that leaves no carbon footprint and improves fuel economy. Five other projects received honorable mentions.
