Board of Regents meets Oct. 13-14

At the October Board of Regents meeting, leaders from the Office of Equity and Diversity (OED) will discuss how OED supports the many diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)-focused objectives in the U of M’s systemwide strategic plan, MPact 2025. Regents are also expected to act on President Gabel’s recommended legislative budget request and recommended six-year capital plan; discuss progress toward MPact 2025 enrollment goals with leadership from U of M Morris; receive an update on trends, opportunities, and challenges in graduate education; and more. Seeking faculty and staff for bulk email study

The U of M is inviting faculty and staff feedback about bulk email received from the University through participation in a bulk email study (IRB approved). Over the course of two months, participants would receive many typical bulk email messages as links to read within your browser. The University will record your time spent on these messages, whether the message is relevant, and your comments. Feedback will be used (shared anonymously) to help improve bulk email practices. Register to participate.

University Senate meeting highlights

The University Senate recently held its first meeting of the academic year. President Gabel spoke about newly appointed senior leaders and the search for a new chancellor of U of M Morris. She also reported that the All-University Honors Committee will be reviewing honorary namings starting with the four oldest named buildings: Folwell Hall and Sanford Hall (Twin Cities); Kiehle Hall (Crookston); and Spooner Hall (Morris). Provost Croson updated senators about professional development modules for supporting students with disabilities. The next meeting is Nov. 3, 2:30 p.m., live on YouTube.

Take the Employee Engagement Follow Up Survey

On Oct. 10, benefits-eligible faculty and staff received an email from [email protected] with a unique link to the Employee Engagement Follow Up Survey. Responses from the survey will help University leaders to understand your perspective on the action to support employee engagement so far and what you would like to see before the next survey in 2023. Click submit at the end of the survey or responses will not be recorded. Learn more about the survey.  

I-RISE applications now open

Applications are now open for the Center for Practice Transformation’s I-RISE: Increasing Representation & Inclusion in Supervision Education, a funding opportunity to increase diversity and inclusivity among licensing supervisors in behavioral health. This grant-funded opportunity will cover the cost of supervision training for Minnesota social work, marriage and family therapy, and clinical counseling practitioners to earn up to 45 supervision CEs through the U of M’s Center for Practice Transformation.

Early Innovation Fund grant program

Technology Commercialization has announced the continuation of the Early Innovation Fund grant program for short-term projects that advance early-stage innovations. The program provides $3,000 to $10,000 per project and is designed to advance the technology readiness of an innovation through support for buying materials, building prototypes, testing services, student workers, and entrepreneurial activities. Open to all U of M faculty, staff, postdocs, and graduate students. Application opens Oct. 17; submissions due Nov. 21. 

University of Minnesota, Minnesota State announce collaboration to address nursing workforce crisis

Minnesota State and the University of Minnesota have entered into a collaboration to reimagine nursing education and address the growing shortage of nurses in Minnesota. The Coalition for Nursing Equity and Excellence will work to increase enrollment in nurse education programs, expand equity in the nursing workforce, and increase the success of nursing students.  

Talking seasonal depression with U of M

About 5 percent of the U.S. population experiences seasonal depression, a subtype of depression that typically occurs when the seasons change. It most commonly affects people starting in the fall and continues into the winter months. Assistant Professor Jeannie Larson talks about the symptoms and causes of seasonal depression, and what people can do to lessen the symptoms. Oct. 19 - Design your Canvas course to be mobile-friendly

Half of all U of M students use the Canvas Student App to access their courses from mobile devices. As an instructor, it is important to know which course materials and activities are suited for mobile. Register for “Meet your students where they are: Design your Canvas course to be mobile-friendly,” an exploratory session that will provide instructors with the student perspective of course materials and activities.  

Nov. 3 - CTS Transportation Research Conference

University of Virginia history professor Peter Norton, keynote speaker at the 2022 Center for Transportation Studies (CTS) Transportation Research Conference, will demonstrate that we already have everything we need for the affordable, healthful, inclusive, and sustainable transportation future we seek. Additional topics at the daylong in-person event include health and equity in transportation, COVID-19 impacts, automated vehicles, safety, electrification, shared mobility, and transit. 

Nov. 17 - Living Well With Pain: Managing Your Pain So It Doesn't Manage You

Join U of M researchers and community experts specializing in the treatment of chronic pain in a UROC Critical Conversation on strategies to empower individuals in managing chronic pain, navigate health systems, and build stronger relationships between patients and care providers. Living Well With Pain: Managing Your Pain So It Doesn't Manage You serves as the kickoff for the Living Well with Pain community conversations. 4 p.m.

Career and Internship Fair relaunch a success

University of Minnesota Crookston’s 2022 Career and Internship Fair was relaunched Sept. 15. The event included over 40 employers, close to 200 students, five panels of experts, a luncheon, and a new location inside the Sargeant Student Center. This is the marquee event of the career services program and hasn't been held on campus since 2019.

Maryam Khaleghiyazdi, an assistant professor of graphic design at U of M Duluth, has an exhibit on display at the VisArts gallery in Rockville, MD, through Oct. 16. Her three-piece animation series, “Living in Between,” presents Khaleghiyazdi’s work, which incorporates her immigrant experience in the United States. 


 

Oct. 18 - Visual Culture Lecture Series kickoff

Artist Junko Ogawa will open the UMD 2022-23 Visual Culture Lecture Series. Ogawa combines her work as an artist with her knowledge of science. A long-time research scientist at Salk Institute, she says, “[I’m] in love with art and science, particularly line work, edges, shape and neuroscience, and virology.” 6 p.m., 120 Solon Campus Center.

 

Oct. 24 - ‘Reimagining DEI’

The LSBE Distinguished Speaker Series will feature Charlene Thomas in “Reimagining DEI.” Thomas is executive vice president and chief diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) officer at United Parcel Service. Thomas also serves on the board of directors for ALLETE and the National Urban League. 4 p.m., Marshall Performing Arts Center.

The spirit of Title IX - Women's athletics at U of M Morris

As part of the U of M Morris Cougar Hall of Fame banquet, a video was produced featuring women athletes from several eras at U of M Morris talking about the difference Title IX made for their college careers.

Oct. 18 - UMR and Mayo Clinic: Kern Center Connects

The University of Minnesota Rochester and the Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery at Mayo Clinic will present the upcoming Kern Center Connects. This event will showcase U of M alumni sharing their research and unique journey from college to career in pursuit of their passion. Attend and hear from UMR alum and PhD candidate Mohamed Addani.

 

Coming Out Day art gallery

In celebration of National Coming Out Day on Oct. 11, UMR's student-led Gender and Sexuality Alliance Rochester is hosting an art gallery through Oct. 14. This gallery will contain art, photography, poetry, and narratives expressing students' experiences of coming out and of being a part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. 3rd floor, University Square.

U of M leading $1 million grant to build super fast ‘TURBO’ telescopes

A team led by University of Minnesota researchers and undergraduate students is constructing two sets of extremely fast telescopes that will enable more detailed studying of gravitational waves and light created by colliding black holes and neutron stars. 

 

 

Submit proposals to improve patient outcomes and experiences

Test your idea for improving healthcare delivery with support from research experts. The RapidEval Unit within the Center for Learning Health System Sciences is accepting proposals through Nov. 4. Specific areas of interest include projects focusing on health equity, primary care, disease prevention, and management of chronic disease. Email [email protected] with questions.

Fall street sweeping begins Oct. 18

Minneapolis Public Works will begin sweeping and leaf collection on streets throughout the city on Oct. 18. Temporary “No Parking” signs will be posted at least 24 hours in advance. Anyone who parks on the street will need to follow posted parking rules or cars may be ticketed and towed.

To reduce risk and improve training, Medical School students participate in simulated clinical experiences where standardized patients interact with physicians-to-be in a room set up like a clinic or an emergency room. Now, the University medical students who intend to go into emergency medicine are testing another option, too: Virtual reality simulation for their Emergency Medicine Advanced Rotation.

Betsy Nelson sits behind a comically large sandwich

When Betsy Nelson ’85 was an undergrad at the U of M in the early ’80s, she worked for the University hospital’s food service. At the time, she thought of it as just a job to help pay bills as she double-majored in psychology and studio arts. Little did she know that her campus job would ultimately play a major role in her career—first as a restaurant pro, and then as a successful food stylist.
