Tarek Tomes named vice president for information technology and chief information officer

Tarek Tomes has been appointed as the University of Minnesota’s next vice president for information technology and chief information officer, effective March 16, 2026. He will report to Executive Vice President for Finance and Operations Gregg Goldman.

IT infrastructure is a vital force in the University’s mission to provide world-class education and research. From supporting extraordinary research and data-intensive innovation to enhancing the digital experience for students, faculty and staff, the CIO's role is critical to collective success.

Tomes’s proven track record of human-centered design and his commitment to transparent, service-oriented leadership will be essential to implement the University’s strategic roadmap and address emerging opportunities in artificial intelligence and research innovation.

He is a highly respected technology leader who joins the University from the State of Minnesota, where he has served as commissioner and state chief information officer since 2019. In his role as a member of the governor’s cabinet, Tomes led the state’s digital transformation efforts, stabilized critical technology infrastructure and championed a "whole-of-state" approach to cybersecurity.

His experience navigating the complex, matrixed environment of state government, coupled with over 25 years of leadership in both the public and private sectors, makes him uniquely qualified to lead the University’s IT community.
